Conservation in Action
The Demonstration Farm at Bison Brae is owned and operated by the Ottawa County Conservation District as a hands-on extension of its mission. The farm gives gardeners, homesteaders, farmers, and the community a place to see soil health and conservation practices on the ground—not just read or hear about them.
By trying and demonstrating practices locally, we hope to share what we learn, explore what works, and take some of the pressure off those interested in trying something new.
An Urban Ag Demonstration Farm
Learning the Land
Established at the beginning of the 2026 growing season, the Demonstration Farm is still in its first chapter. This year is about observing, experimenting, and learning how the land responds as we begin shaping the farm for the future.
What we learn along the way is part of the demonstration. We’ll share both the practices we try and the lessons they teach us, giving others an opportunity to learn alongside us as the farm grows.
What We’re Demonstrating
The Demonstration Farm provides a place to explore practices that build healthier soils, support biodiversity, and make better use of the natural resources around us. As projects develop, we’ll share what we’re doing, what we’re learning, and how these practices can be adapted at different scales.
Soil Health
Building healthier, more resilient soil through regenerative growing and management practices.
Pollinators & Biodiversity
Native grasses, forbs, flowering plants, and habitat that support pollinators and other beneficial species.
Gardens & Growing Methods
Testing different growing methods, weed-suppression strategies, and practical approaches for gardens.
Windbreaks & Trees
Demonstrating windbreak repair and exploring thoughtful management of both desirable and unwanted trees.
Wildlife & Habitat
Exploring how conservation practices can support the abundant wildlife and diverse habitats found around Bison Brae.
Composting & Nutrient Cycling
Exploring practices such as vermicomposting that turn organic materials into resources for healthier soil.
Growing What’s Possible
The Demonstration Farm is just getting started. As Bison Brae grows, we’re exploring new opportunities for hands-on learning, practical skills, and experiences that connect people with conservation, agriculture, and the land.
Homesteading Skills
Classes may explore harvesting and preserving food through canning, drying, freezing, freeze drying, and other practical homesteading skills.
Animals & Beekeeping
Bees, poultry, and other animals could become part of the learning experience, including beekeeping education and using goats to demonstrate brush management.
Field Trips & Education
The farm is being developed as a destination for school field trips, hands-on activities, community classes, and seasonal learning experiences.
Growing the Farm
Potential improvements include rainwater catchment, a high tunnel, additional pollinator plantings, and an outdoor classroom or covered gathering area.
The Partnership at Bison Brae
The Demonstration Farm is located at Bison Brae, the property of Patti and Gordon Fiedler. Through their collaboration with the Ottawa County Conservation District, a portion of the property is being used to demonstrate conservation practices and create new opportunities for community learning.
The name The Demonstration Farm at Bison Brae recognizes this partnership while distinguishing the demonstration farm from the other areas that make Bison Brae home.

The Demonstration Farm occupies a portion of the Bison Brae property along Buffalo Road.
